Here are some essential tips to help you master classroom management and make your supply teaching assignments successful:

Establish Clear Expectations from the Start

One of the first steps in effective classroom management is to set clear expectations. As soon as you enter the classroom, introduce yourself and outline your rules and expectations. Setting expectations is crucial for all students, but it’s especially important for younger ones who need a solid foundation to begin their educational journeys. Keep the expectations simple and consistent with the school’s policies. For example, you might emphasise the importance of respect, listening when others are speaking, and following instructions promptly.

Be Consistent with Discipline

Consistency is key when managing a classroom. If you set a rule, make sure you enforce it every time it’s broken. Inconsistent discipline can confuse students and undermine your authority. Always make sure to use the school’s behaviour management system to ensure you are in line with their procedures and policies.

Develop a Rapport with Students Quickly

Building a rapport with students, even if you’re only with them for a day, can significantly impact their behaviour and your overall classroom management. Learn and use their names, show genuine interest in their work and well-being and always be approachable. Positive relationships foster a co-operative and respectful classroom environment.

Keep Students Engaged

Be Prepared

For supply teachers, being prepared at all times is essential when working on various assignments. Preparation helps mitigate behaviour issues in the classroom by providing clear structure and engaging activities, which keep students focused and less likely to misbehave. With a well-thought-out plan and adaptable resources, you can quickly establish authority and create a positive learning environment, even in unfamiliar settings. It’s important to always have a  backup plan for activities in case something doesn’t go as expected.

We also recommend that you get to know the layout of the school and the location of important resources. Familiarise yourself with the school’s emergency procedures and any specific needs of the students you will be teaching, so that if emergency issues arise, you already have the information required to efficiently deal with the problems.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is a highly effective tool for classroom management. By consistently praising students for their good behavior and efforts, you reinforce their positive actions and encourage them to maintain high standards. Verbal praise and recognition not only boost students’ self-esteem but also create a positive atmosphere in the classroom. Additionally, using tangible rewards such as stickers, certificates, or special privileges can further motivate students and reinforce desirable behaviours (make sure you have permission from the school before implementing rewards).

Remain Calm and Composed

Your demeanor can also significantly influence the classroom environment. Whilst it’s not always easy to remain calm and composed especially in challenging situations, it’s crucial that your students see that you are in control as they will more likely respect your authority and follow your instructions.

It’s important not to hesitate in seeking support from school staff when faced with challenging situations. Each school has its own unique dynamics, policies, and student needs, and navigating these can sometimes be complex. When encountering difficulties, whether it’s managing a disruptive class, addressing specific student behaviour issues, or understanding school procedures, consulting with your designated school contact will be incredibly beneficial.
